Information for Year 6 Parents

Welcome to you and your child to the final year at St. Cross School! We look to and encourage our Year 6 to set the best examples at all times as our school leaders and mentors. Year 6 promises to be a hardworking, exciting and immensely rewarding year and one which presents a myriad of challenges and opportunities for the children to seize upon, in every area of school life. Some positions of responsibility, for example, Head Girl and Boy and House Captains are discussed and appointed by staff, whilst others are very much on a voluntary basis. All positions offer the opportunity to work as a vital part of a team in facilitating the smooth running of the school (e.g. helping out in classes lower down the school, being buddies and/or peer mediators). By the end of the summer term, we hope that each pupil will feel well prepared, full of self-belief and excited at the prospect of moving up to Year 7.

Please help your child by ensuring that they read for at least 20 minutes each night and sign their homework diary on a daily basisIn Year 6, they may read independently some evenings, however they should be listened to by an adult at least twice a week. Your involvement is invaluable for supporting your child’s development. In order for the children to gain the most out of reading, ask them comprehension questions about the text they are reading, check their understanding and help them to develop a love of reading.

Weekly spellings will be stuck into your child’s homework book. Spellings will be handed out on a Monday and tested on the following Monday.

Every Monday, your child will receive:

  • Maths – a maths activity on paper
                - children are expected to regularly play Times Table Rockstars
-for more information on maths homework expectations, please see the
                  'Bank of Home Learning Resources'.
  • Reading -please see above for expectations.
  • RE – twice a half term

Please note that homework will be handed out on the Monday and will be due in for the following Monday, and your child will record their homework in their diaries.

Please always be prepared with an indoor and outdoor kit and ensure that children are not sharing kits with siblings.
Indoor and outdoor PE kit: Navy shorts, blue T-Shirt and plimsolls, school tracksuit or navy tracksuit bottoms/school jumper and trainers-all labelled please!

Other Tips for Parents

Support with homework:

Please help your child with homework when necessary.

Two possible methods:

i)   Work through with them – encouraging but not doing it for  them.

ii) Child completes work then parents review and proof-read with them.

Homework Diary:

A folder or wallet should be used to carry work home and all homework should be neatly presented.   Please look at diary weekly and sign when homework is completed. We will sign it too. If pages are empty – please ask your child why? Children are expected to read daily, noting down how much they have read. It will also be used as a communication between teachers and parents. Please see notes for completion inside front cover.

Please help your child to check that homework is given in on time.

General Organisation:

Please help your child to be organised and independent by:

a) Ensuring that he/she has the necessary pen, pencils, ruler, P.E. Kit, indoor shoes and named uniform.

b) Ensuring that they have packed their schoolbag the previous evening – ready with correct books and equipment for next day.

P.E. is on a Tuesday and Friday.
