St. Cross Catholic Primary School

“Together we grow in God’s love”

Creative Arts

At St Cross we recognise the importance of a curriculum that nurtures and enriches each individual child’s creative skills. We incorporate this into our curriculum through a range of media, including dance, drama, role play, art, design technology and the study of prolific artists, sculptors and architects.

Our art and design curriculum is structured to enable pupils to develop skills as well as to develop their appreciation of the work of a range of artists, architects and sculptors. Please see the individual year group curriculum overviews for further details.

At St. Cross we are fortunate to have a specialist music teacher who, alongside the class teacher delivers the weekly lessons. We also offer 1:1 and small group lessons teaching a range of instruments including the piano, trumpet, violin, clarinet and the keyboard. In addition, this team of experienced teachers have enabled us to offer whole class recorder lessons in Year 2 and whole class violin tuition for Year 3. We continually look for further opportunities to enrich music at St Cross and we recognise the importance of arts partners,  who regularly run workshops throughout the school.

As a Catholic school singing is an integral part of following our faith. This is evident in our weekly hymn practice, annual Nativity and a variety of music productions. We have an established choir who sing annually at the O2 and the Royal Albert Hall. Children are given lots of opportunities throughout the year to showcase their talents to the rest of the school and the wider community.

Drama is embedded in our curriculum, particularly in English, Humanities and RE. Again there are several occasions throughout the year when the children take part in performances to share their skills.

Each year group is taught dance for half a term throughout the year as part of their PE lessons. A highlight in our school calendar is our annual May Procession where the day ends with each class performing choreographed dances, ranging from country dancing and street dance to Maypole dancing. This is an enjoyable experience and allows children to showcase their skills.

We also run after school clubs, which include street dance and cheerleading. These sessions are open to all pupils.
